College Move-In Day & The #1 Shift Every Mom Must Make
Dear moms, I want you to hear me.
You have done an incredible job raising your children to embrace new experiences and meet new people. As they embark on their journey of independence, take a moment to congratulate yourself, give yourself a pat on the back, a well-deserved “atta girl.” It’s bittersweet, I know. I’ve been through two college drop-offs myself, and I understand how hard it can be as your role as a mom shifts.
But remember, this shift is as it should be. As your kids venture out to navigate their everyday lives on their own, there’s a corresponding shift that you must make – navigating your new normal. The most crucial shift every mom (and parent) must make is going from being a fixer to a coach. This transformation empowers your children to become confident decision-makers and problem-solvers.
This Season One finale episode is dedicated entirely to moms and we are diving deep into a topic that hits home for many. We’re shining a light on the emotional rollercoaster that is “college move-in day” and the profound shift that every mom must embrace as they prepare to launch their children into the world.

We hope that you’ll leave this episode with a newfound sense of empowerment and the tools you need to embrace this beautiful chapter in your life.
Shifting from Fixer to Coach
In the earlier stages of parenting, it’s natural to be a fixer, solving your child’s problems and telling them what to do. However, as they grow up and gain more independence, this role must evolve. When they leave home for college or any new adventure, it’s time for you to become their coach.
A fixer dictates solutions, whereas a coach asks questions to help their children figure out the best course of action. This coaching approach empowers them and instills confidence. As parents, our ultimate goal is to raise self-sufficient, independent, and thriving adults who can make decisions and solve problems effectively.
Making the Shift
Making the transition from fixer to coach takes practice, and it’s completely normal to slip back into fixer mode occasionally. However, with conscious effort and these five questions in your parenting toolbox, you can develop your coaching skills:
1. What outcome are you looking for here?
2. What role, if any, have you played in this conflict?
3. Who else is involved, and who could offer guidance or help with this problem?
4. What options have you considered so far?
5. What do you think would be the best course of action?
Embrace College Move-In Day
As you prepare for college move-in day, here are three essential tips to make it less stressful for everyone:
1. Know where you’re going: Check for parking passes and specific arrival times, and leave early to avoid stress and delays. Involve your child in gathering this information to empower them in the process.
2. Bring a toolbox: Pack essential tools, such as a hammer, screwdrivers, and wall hooks. These items will come in handy for setting up their new space.
3. Stay fueled: Keep plenty of water and snacks on hand to keep everyone energized during the move-in process.
Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to leave a heartfelt letter under their pillow before you leave. Remind them of your love and support, and let them know you’re just a phone call away.
Moms, you’ve done an incredible job raising your children, and as they embark on their adventures, it’s time to shift from being a fixer to a coach. Empower them to make their own decisions and find their solutions. Remember, you’re laying a solid foundation for their future.
